New Doors for Every Type of Norwich Home
New doors can make a real difference to a Norwich home. The front door sets the first impression and keeps your home secure, while the doors at the back decide how well your home connects with the garden.
Amber surveys, supplies and installs made-to-measure replacement doors, from front and back doors to bi-fold, sliding patio and French doors. We fit them in homes of every age, from Victorian terraces near the Golden Triangle and 1930s semis in Eaton and Hellesdon to village cottages and newer developments on the edge of the city.
We have been improving homes across Norfolk since 1996, and you can see doors, colours, glass and hardware in person at our showroom in Hellesdon.
Choose Your Door Type
Start with the type of door you need. Each one links to the full range, with styles, colours and options.
FRONT & BACK DOORS
Composite, solid core, uPVC and aluminium front and back doors, made to measure with a wide choice of colours, glass designs and hardware.
BI-FOLD DOORS
Panels fold and stack neatly to one side, opening a wide section of wall to the garden. A popular choice for kitchens, extensions and garden rooms.
PATIO & SLIDING DOORS
Large glass panels glide past each other, so nothing swings into the room or garden. Two-pane and triple-track sliding doors are available.
FRENCH DOORS
A pair of doors that open fully from the centre. Ideal for smaller openings, or for replacing a window with a doorway onto the garden.
Front & Back Doors: Choosing the Material
Front and back doors come in four main materials. Each has a different look, feel and price point, and our team can help you compare them. For entrance door styles, colours and local projects, see our dedicated page on front doors in Norwich.

Composite Doors
A tough outer skin over an insulated core gives the look of painted timber without the repainting. Composite is our most popular door material, with a wide range of styles, colours and glass.

Solid Core Doors
Built around a solid core for a substantial, reassuring feel, with a focus on strength and security. Available in contemporary and traditional designs.

uPVC Doors
A practical, cost-effective option for front and back doors, in white, colours and woodgrain finishes, with glazed and solid panel designs.

Aluminium Doors
Slim, strong frames and a clean, contemporary look, with powder-coated colours including black and anthracite grey. Well suited to modern homes and renovations.
Security specifications vary by door type, and PAS 24 options are available on selected doors.

Doors for Norwich's Period & Character Homes
Norwich has a large stock of Victorian, Edwardian and 1930s homes, along with older cottages and farmhouses in the villages around the city. On these properties the front door is a big part of the character, so style, colour and glass matter as much as performance.
Victorian & Edwardian Homes
Panelled composite doors with decorative glass, top lights and heritage colours such as black, deep green and blue suit many terraced and semi-detached homes. Traditional hardware, such as knockers and letterplates in black or chrome, finishes the look.
1930s Homes
Door styles and glass designs that echo the period, often with matching side panels, help 1930s homes keep their original feel while gaining modern insulation and locking.
Cottages & Rural Homes
Stable doors, cottage-style designs and flush back doors that sit alongside flush casement windows suit older cottages and farmhouses around Norwich.
Conservation Areas & Listed Buildings
Parts of Norwich are covered by conservation areas, and some have extra planning controls, known as Article 4 directions, that can include changes to front doors. Listed buildings need listed building consent for most alterations.
Requirements depend on the individual property, so permission should never be assumed. Amber can help you understand the door options and whether you should seek planning advice before you order.
Also Available: Stable Doors & Entrance Porches
For some homes the right answer is a door with a little extra.
STABLE DOORS
Top and bottom halves open separately, so you can let in light and air while keeping children and pets safely inside. A natural fit for cottages and farmhouses.
ENTRANCE PORCHES
A porch adds a sheltered entrance, space for coats and shoes, and a buffer between your hallway and the weather.

Every home is different, so these are examples of real recent jobs and quotes, not fixed prices. The price for your door will depend on the factors below.
The cost of a new door depends on the type of door, the material and the size of the opening, along with the choices you make on colour, glass and hardware. The main factors are:
- the type of door: front or back, bi-fold, sliding patio or French
- the material: composite, solid core, uPVC or aluminium
- the size of the opening, and whether you add side panels or a top light
- the glass design and glazing specification
- the colour, including dual-colour options where available
- the handles, letterplate and security specification
- for bi-fold and patio doors, the number of panels and whether the opening needs widening or structural work
- access, thresholds and making good around the frame
Amber prices each project to its own specification rather than quoting generic prices, so the quickest way to an accurate figure is a showroom visit or a home appointment. All our quotations are written and include VAT.
What your quotation includes
- Advice on door types, styles, colours and security
- Made-to-measure manufacture to surveyed sizes
- Removal and disposal of your old door and frame

New Doors in Norwich: Your Questions Answered
How long does it take to fit a new door?
Most single doors are fitted in a day, including removing the old door and frame and making good around the opening. Bi-fold and patio doors in larger or altered openings can take longer. We confirm the expected timing at survey stage.
Composite, solid core, uPVC or aluminium: which material is right for me?
It depends on the look you want, your budget and the style of your home. Composite doors give a timber-like appearance with low maintenance, solid core doors focus on strength and a substantial feel, uPVC doors are a practical, cost-effective option, and aluminium doors suit contemporary homes with their slim frames.
You can compare them side by side at our Norwich showroom.
Bi-fold, sliding patio or French doors: which should I choose?
Bi-fold doors open up the widest clear space and suit larger openings onto patios and gardens. Sliding patio doors keep large glass panels in view and need no space to swing open. French doors suit smaller openings and are a popular way to replace a window with a doorway.
We can advise which suits your opening when we visit.
How secure are your doors?
Security depends on the door type and specification. Features can include multi-point locking, high-security cylinders and toughened safety glass, and PAS 24 options are available on selected doors. We will explain the security specification of any door you are considering.
Do I need planning permission for a new door?
Replacing a door with one of a similar appearance does not usually need planning permission. Listed buildings, flats, and homes in conservation areas or covered by Article 4 directions may have additional requirements, so permission should never be assumed.
Widening an opening for bi-fold or patio doors may also need Building Regulations approval. We can talk this through at your survey.
What guarantee do Amber doors have?
Amber doors come with our 20-Year Product Guarantee. See our door guarantee page for details.
Do you remove my old door?
Yes. Our installation service includes removing your existing door and frame and disposing of them appropriately. The fitting team protects your home during the work and leaves the area clean and tidy.
Can I see the doors before I buy?
Yes. Our 5,000 sq ft showroom in Hellesdon has composite, solid core and uPVC doors on display, along with patio, French and bi-fold doors, colours, glass designs and hardware. You can also try styles and colours with our online door designer.
