GREY LEAN-TO CONSERVATORY | IPSWICH IP5
A compact, light-filled living space for a Kesgrave family home in Suffolk.
The brief
A Kesgrave family approached Amber Home Improvements wanting a bright, year-round living space at the back of their IP5 home — without the cost or disruption of a full extension. Space along the rear elevation was tight, so every millimetre mattered, but they weren’t prepared to compromise on light, warmth or security. Our answer was a slim-framed grey lean-to conservatory designed precisely to the footprint, opening directly onto the garden through integrated bi-folding doors.
Property & location
The project sits in Kesgrave, one of the most sought-after residential areas on the eastern edge of Ipswich. Like many homes across Kesgrave, Martlesham Heath, Rushmere St Andrew and out towards Woodbridge, the property has a compact rear garden and a south-leaning aspect — ideal conditions for a lean-to, where a lower-pitched roof sits neatly against the existing brickwork while still pulling in generous natural light throughout the day.
Design & specification
With space at a premium, slender sightlines were the priority. Amber specified a full-height glazed lean-to — no dwarf wall — so the room feels completely open to the garden from floor to ceiling. Frames were finished in RAL 7016 Anthracite Grey to complement the home’s existing window palette, and the roof uses large panes of thermally efficient glass that pour daylight into the space without letting it overheat in a Suffolk summer.
Key specification at a glance:
- Full-height glazed lean-to — no dwarf wall
- RAL 7016 Anthracite Grey uPVC frames
- A+ rated double glazing as standard
- Solar-control, thermally efficient glass roof panels
- Integrated bi-folding doors opening onto the garden
- Concrete slab foundation
Thermal & security gains
Every Amber window and door is A+ rated as standard, and this lean-to is no exception. The low U-value glass keeps the room comfortable through a Suffolk winter and in the height of summer, so the family genuinely use it all year round — not just from May to September. PAS 24 compliant locking across the bi-folds and opening lights delivers the level of security you’d expect from Amber Home Improvements, backed by a 20-year guarantee on parts and labour.
The outcome
From the outside, the lean-to looks compact and considered — tucked beautifully against the existing elevation. Step inside and the scale shifts: there’s room for a comfortable seating area and a dining corner, and when the bi-folds open, the conservatory and garden read as one continuous living space. A perfect example of how a carefully designed lean-to can transform the way a Kesgrave family use their home without demanding the square footage, or the budget, of a full extension.
