UPVC vs Composite Door – Which Should You Buy?

When customers come door shopping at our Norwich showroom, they will often ask for our opinion on whether we would most recommend a UPVC door or composite door.

Composite Door with Bevelled Glazing

We hate to sit on the fence, but it’s an impossible question for us to answer as both door types have their merits and will enhance any entrance. That’s why we happily supply both products.

It’s mostly down to personal taste. You may also find that the style and personality of one door will suit the character of your home more so than the other.

Having some knowledge of what UPVC doors and composite doors offer should help you pick between the two.

UPVC Doors

In case you didn’t know, UPVC stands for un-plasticised polyvinyl chloride.

UPVC doors are built by encasing an insulated steel frame in un-plasticized polyvinyl chloride, That’s why they’re so robust.

A highly affordable and energy efficient solution, UPVC doors are also simple to clean.

Whenever they get dirty, you only need a wet, soapy cloth to leave them looking spotless again – a quick wipe will do the job.

As for repainting the door, it won’t need it. The finish will keep its colour, throughout its lifespan, without a fresh coat of paint ever being necessary.

Composite Doors

Your initial thought when seeing a composite door for the first time will be that it looks distinctly like a timber door.

The reason why is because wood is one of the constituent materials used to construct composite doors, together with UPVC and an insulating foam.

It will cost you more to buy a composite door than a UPVC door, but it’s one of the strongest doors on the market, has a very thick frame and GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) skin. You can recoup the extra cost through the energy savings you make.

Again, it only needs minimal maintenance and no repainting, and tends to come in a broader colour palette than a UPVC door.

Our UPVC doors and composite doors are all beautifully showcased within the natural environment of our showroom. Amber’s doors are open seven days a week if you want to come and see them.
