Is Composite Or UPVC Best For Your New Front Door?

Is Composite Or UPVC Best For Your New Front Door?

Your front door is an important feature of your property with different purposes and it is not to be overlooked.

Creating a positive first impression is vital to the overall aesthetic appeal of your home and the front door is likely the first part of your home that visitors will see. In addition to its visual interest, it is imperative that a front door keeps your home secure.

If your current front door is falling short in either of these categories, then it is time to think about a replacement door built with one of two quality materials such as UPVC or composite.

UPVC stands for un-plasticised polyvinyl chloride which is the material wrapped around a steel frame to create a UPVC door and composite refers to a combination of materials creating a composite door.

How is a composite door constructed?

A composite door is made by combining several materials including UPVC, wood and foam then wrapping this frame with a Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) skin.

The GRP skin gives the composite door a visual effect of wood grain material, however the similarities end there as the composite door’s construction is actually far firmer, water resistant and stronger than a traditional timber door.

Composite doors are renowned for their strength as well as their thermal efficiency and at Amber we offer the highest quality composite doors to keep your home secure and energy efficient year round.

The different components of a composite door

How does a UPVC door differ from a composite door?

While composite doors are constructed utilising several materials, UPVC doors are built solely with plastic and also have a slimmer build depth of around 28mm compared to a composite door’s build depth of around 44mm.

Because UPVC doors are constructed with one material, they have a lower price point than composite doors which are fabricated using several different materials.

However, just because UPVC doors cost less does not mean that they are inferior products and our UPVC doors at Amber offer exceptional thermal and security features.

What is the best way to clean and maintain a UPVC or composite door?

The best way to keep your doors looking their best is by simply giving the frame a wipe down with warm, soapy water every four months – it is important to avoid using abrasive tools or solvent based cleaning products.

Once a year, an application of lubricant to the hinges, locks and handles will keep the door operating smoothly.

Be sure to regularly check and keep the threshold and drainage holes free of debris to keep water out of the seals. This is especially critical during bouts of wet and windy weather conditions.
