3 Clever Home Improvement Tips For A Smaller House

3 home improvement ideas for smaller homes

As your family grows, your house seems to shrink, and it isn’t helpful if you live in a property that’s been built in the last 40 years.

Why do we say that? It’s because the average size of a new-build home has shrunk by 20% during that time.

Let’s hope they don’t get any smaller, but with a strong demand for housing in the UK, it cannot be ruled out.

A declutter can help, but only to a point. When that fails, it’s time to revert to a few home improvement tricks that are known to make a home interior feel larger in size.

Here are three of those tricks:

Hanging up mirrors

It’s a trick that you might already be familiar with, and one that’s really effective, so long as the mirrors are of the right size and they’re hung in the right areas.

Rather than buy lots of small mirrors and group them together, it’s better to get a few large mirrors, with a small frame surround, and install them near a window.

Kept away from a wall or ceiling’s edge, any mirror should be hung so that the middle of it sits at the eye-level of a person of average height.

Using light colours in rooms

The best way to reflect the natural light that fills your rooms is to coat your walls in a light colour and opt for the same when it comes to any furnishings.

However, we appreciate that not every room will get lots of light. For those areas, it’s actually worth straying away from a white or other pale shade, and choosing black.

If repainting your walls in a light or dark colour, do the trims, doors and ceiling in the same colour too.

Fitting bi-folds, French or patio doors

Use any outdoor space that you have to your advantage by getting bi-folding, French or patio doors installed so that you can open your house.

With a slide, fold or a push, they will help you bring the outdoors indoors and leave your living space feeling more spacious than it’s ever felt before.

They don’t necessarily need to be open to coax in lots of natural light as each of these doors has huge glass panes and slender framework.
