Windows, Doors and Roofline for Horsford Church of England VA Primary School, NR10

A summer-holiday refit of windows, fire exits and roofline at a Norfolk church school

Horsford Church of England VA Primary School sits on Holt Road in Horsford, just north of Norwich. The original building has tall multi-pane windows, stone cills and decorative arched brick heads, with later single-storey classroom wings set around a courtyard and playground.

By 2026 the timber windows and doors had reached the end of their working life. Paint was peeling from frames and cills, some cills had rotted through, glazing had blown, and several of the old blue timber exit doors had been patched. The fascias and gutters over the front toilet block were splitting and coming away. For a school, the bigger concern was the exits: doors that children and staff rely on to get out quickly needed to open freely, close under control and keep small fingers safe.

Working with Principal Tanya Kirton and the Diocese of Norwich, Amber Home Improvements replaced windows, doors and roofline across the site during the August 2026 summer holidays, with the team on site for under two weeks.

The School

  • School: Horsford Church of England VA Primary School
  • Location: Holt Road, Horsford, Norfolk NR10
  • Client: The school, working with the Diocese of Norwich
  • Principal: Tanya Kirton
  • Timing: August 2026 summer holidays, under two weeks on site
  • Work: White uPVC windows and doors, commercial aluminium doorsets, roofline, a steel louvred boiler room door and associated making good

Horsford is a short run from Amber’s Hellesdon Park showroom in Norwich and sits well inside our everyday installation area across Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire.

The Brief

The school and the Diocese wanted one contractor to deal with the whole building in one go, rather than patching individual openings year by year. The priorities were clear:

  • Every external classroom door that serves as a fire exit to open outward easily, close under control and protect children’s fingers
  • Commercial-grade doorsets on the busiest exits, including a playground emergency exit with panic bars
  • Replacement windows that look right on the original elevations, not flat modern panes
  • New roofline over the front toilet block
  • All of it finished during the summer holidays, so no teaching time was lost
  • A team that understands how to work safely on a school site

What We Did

Classroom back doors and fire exits

Around ten external classroom back doors open straight out to the playground and covered areas. These are the classrooms’ fire exits, so each one was replaced with a white uPVC door fitted with a door closer and anti-finger-trap protection on the hinge side. The closers bring each door back under control rather than letting it slam, and the finger guards close the gap that catches small hands.

These are fire exit doors, not fire-resisting doors. Their job is to let a class get out quickly and safely, and to stay secure when they are shut.

Aluminium doorsets (playground, courtyard, kitchen)

Three of the busiest openings needed commercial aluminium Shopline doorsets rather than uPVC. All three include anti-finger-trap protection as standard.

The playground emergency exit is a pair of white aluminium French doors with horizontal panic bars and hold-open closers, so the doors can stay open at break times and still close under control when released. The courtyard French doors sit on a fire route, so they have standard self-closing closers with no hold-open. Facing the road, the kitchen has a solid white aluminium pad door with a hold-open closer for deliveries.

We liaised with the fire inspector on the exit arrangements, including the panic hardware, closers and hold-opens, so the finished doors matched what the school needed for day-to-day use and for evacuation.

Windows matching the original elevations

Across the school the new windows and doors are white uPVC, chosen to sit comfortably on the older elevations rather than looking like flat modern panes.

The kitchen elevation is the largest run: five tall windows of around 3.4m, with attic windows above. We cut out glazing in the kitchen and fitted an extractor fan as part of the job. The attic windows were fitted from our own access equipment, because the kitchen attic hatch sits around three metres up with no built-in ladder.

Around six shaped windows in the Principal’s office were made to follow their existing openings. High-level windows above the boiler room complete the main elevations.

Bathroom windows and roofline

Four toilet-block windows were replaced in white uPVC with obscure glass. Over the front toilet block we fitted new black fascias, soffits and guttering, replacing timber that had been splitting and coming away.

Boiler room

High windows above the boiler room were replaced in white uPVC with a multi-pane bar pattern to match the original look. The boiler room itself has a new steel louvred door, so the plant room stays ventilated and secure.

Working on a live school site

All of the work was planned for the August 2026 summer holidays and finished in under two weeks, so no teaching time was lost. Our installers are directly employed by Amber, DBS-checked and briefed on safeguarding.

Electrics were made safe before the old frames came out and second-fixed once the new windows and doors were in, through our preferred electrical contractor. Making good was included so openings were finished neatly rather than left for someone else to tidy. We brought access equipment as needed for the high kitchen and attic work.

Keys and overnight security were agreed with the school at a high level: the building was locked down each evening and keys were handed back at completion. Waste was cleared as the work went on, and each area was left clean for the new term.

Outcome

Horsford Church of England VA Primary School went back for the autumn term with:

  • Classroom fire exit doors that open easily, close under control and protect small fingers
  • Commercial aluminium doorsets on the playground, courtyard and kitchen, with panic bars and closers set for how each exit is used
  • White uPVC windows that follow the original elevations, including the tall kitchen run, attic windows, boiler-room high windows and shaped Principal’s office openings
  • A steel louvred boiler room door and new black roofline over the front toilet block
  • Electrics made safe and second-fixed, with making good included

For a school glazing and door job of this size in East Anglia, Amber handled the survey, manufacture and installation end to end, with electrics through our preferred contractor and making good as part of the same visit. The Diocese of Norwich and Principal Tanya Kirton had one point of contact and a building ready for pupils on the first day of term.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Was the work carried out during term time?

No. All of the work at Horsford Church of England VA Primary School was done during the August 2026 summer holidays, with the Amber team on site for under two weeks. No teaching time was lost.

Are the new classroom doors fire doors?

They are fire exits, not fire-resisting doors. Around ten classroom back doors open straight outside and are used as fire exits. Each one was replaced with a white uPVC door with a closer and anti-finger-trap protection, so it opens easily, closes under control and protects children’s fingers.

Why use aluminium for some of the doors?

The playground exit, the courtyard exit and the kitchen door get the heaviest use. Commercial aluminium doorsets are built for that kind of traffic. The playground doors have panic bars for emergency exit, and all three aluminium doorsets have anti-finger-trap protection built in.

What does a hold-open closer do?

A hold-open closer lets a door stay open when that is useful, such as for kitchen deliveries or at break times, and still close under control when released. At Horsford, hold-open closers were fitted only where the layout called for them. The courtyard doors on the fire route have standard closers, so they always close themselves.

Did you involve the fire inspector?

Yes. We liaised with the fire inspector on the exit arrangements, including the panic hardware, closers and hold-opens.

Can you match windows on an older school building?

Yes. At Horsford the tall kitchen windows, the attic windows and the high windows above the boiler room were replaced in white uPVC with a multi-pane bar pattern, and the Principal’s office windows were made to follow their shaped openings.

Does Amber work on school and church sites?

Yes. Our installers are directly employed, DBS-checked and briefed on safeguarding, and we plan school work around term dates. We have also fitted windows and doors for Church of England vicarages across East Anglia.

How can another school find out more about this project?

Other schools who would like to hear about the Horsford project can ask via the Diocese of Norwich, or contact Amber directly to talk through their own building.

Does Amber work in Horsford and NR10?

Yes. Amber Home Improvements is based at Unit 52, Hellesdon Park Road, Norwich NR6 5DR, a short drive from Horsford, and covers Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire. Call 01603 672638 to arrange a survey.
