What do we mean by a standard door size?
Rather than one official UK standard, the market works with a set of widely accepted standard door sizes. In England and Wales, 2’6” (30 inches / 762 mm) is the familiar favourite.
North of the border, many doors come in closer to 28.5 inches (726 mm). Installers define “standard” a little differently depending on the ranges they supply and how they fit.

Standard Internal Door Sizes
Both imperial and metric naming remain in everyday use. A “2 ft 6” door, still seen in older stock and some supplier catalogues, translates directly to 762 mm.
England and Wales regularly use 2’3”, 2’6” and 2’9”. Scotland is more metric‑minded, and in newer homes 2040 mm‑high doors are often specified.

Standard External Front & Back Door Sizes
Most UK external door replacements fall into a predictable height/width band. Many are 1981 mm tall and span widths from 610 mm up to 926 mm, which tends to suit traditional masonry openings and makes off‑the‑shelf solutions straightforward.
If you’re after something taller, the 2040 mm series, widely adopted in newer Scottish properties, is becoming a popular choice elsewhere for a taller, airier look.

Standard Door Sizes and Materials
Material choice influences overall thickness as well as size availability. Timber slabs commonly sit in the 44–56 mm range; composite doors can run roughly 44–70 mm; UPVC alternatives are generally slimmer.
That extra (or missing) depth matters as it affects insulation performance, locking systems and hinge gear.
